How to Apply Your Skincare Correctly

The majority of the questions I receive from clients are questions regarding layering products. We all spend so much time researching our products and curating our routines, so of course we want our products to work to the best of our ability.

This leads us to questions like, am I layering my products correctly? Should this product be applied before or after this one? Can these products be applied in the same routine? We are going to get into all of that but first, it is important to understand your skin and what works best for you and your lifestyle. Not every product comes with black-and-white instructions and that is why you want to understand your skin and habits to customize your routine based on what works best for you!

Of course, start by cleansing, and exfoliating your skin (1-3 times a week depending on the strength of the exfoliation), and tone your skin prior to applying your products.

Growth factors need to be applied to the skin as the first step in the routine after cleansing. No matter the consistency. Yes, that’s right even a cream growth factor like Multi-Action Cream needs to be applied as the first step.

Why are growth factors applied first?
The molecular size in a growth factor product is larger than the rest of your skincare products so it needs a clean surface to shimmy through the pore or else, it won't be able to get to the tissue layer it needs to in order to work correctly.

Exosomes are delivery systems for your other products so if your growth factor contains exosomes, it is another reason to apply the product first.

I like to apply my growth factors AM and PM and that is what I recommend unless, of course, it doesn’t work for your specific routine.

I recommend taking the time to apply your eye treatment product as the next step following your growth factor so it will create a barrier for your Vitamin C and A. Reminder to be gentle with your eye area and apply the product with your ring finger with soft tapping motions moving the product upwards.

If you have a spot treatment as part of your routine, I suggest applying that next.

Now we get to your Vitamin C and Vitamin A.

Can you apply Vitamin C in the PM and Vitamin A in the AM? The short answer is yes! So why is it recommended to apply Vitamin C in the AM and Vitamin A in the PM?

When this idea first came into fruition around 40 + years ago, tretinoin and L ascorbic acid were the only forms of Vitamin A and C available and together could make the skin sensitive. So it became a rule of thumb to apply them this way.

Now with all the advancements in technology, you can make adjustments to this rule.

It is important to note, Vitamin C protects your skin from sun damage, free radicals, and pollution.
Vitamin A products are recommended to be used at night because of sun sensitization but the Vitamin A is still stuck in the epidermis the day after applying, so as always, you should apply and reapply SPF daily. Unfortunately, not all people reapply their SPF throughout the day so that is why it is recommended at night. If you are applying your SPF throughout the day, Vitamin A is totally fine to apply in the morning.

Following next with your Hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic Acid helps with hydration, anti-aging, and protecting against environmental factors that can damage your skin. I like applying my Hyaluronic Acid after my treatment products to seal everything in. Depending on the Hyaluronic Acid you use, it may suggest applying before your treatment products, you can decide what works best in your routine!

After that, I apply my moisturizer. For me, moisturizer is a non-negotiable and something I have to have in my skincare routine to feel complete.

Last but most importantly, finish off with SPF in the morning. No. Matter. What. Reapply every 2 hours.
