Debunking Common Skincare Misconceptions
The skincare industry is full of passionate and educated communities that are full of tips and tricks. However, like anything, there are some common misconceptions. I am breaking down some common misconceptions I have learned from being a licensed esthetician, and working in the industry for 15+ years. Through trial and error I have learned to take a second look at some of the following common theories.
#1 - A common misconception people have is that when I link a product from my website I’m receiving commission. That is not true, that money goes right back into our business so we can do fun promotions and our yearly Black Friday sale. This is why I don’t consider myself an influencer. Most influencers get a percentage of the sale when someone buys anything from their link. I could talk about the ins and outs of this industry for hours so if you guys are interested in hearing more about it, I can make this into a video.
#2 - Your skin type matters! Before you jump to try the latest product, you should check to see if it would be beneficial for your skin type. That might seem very obvious, but it is easy to see a new product launch and automatically want to add to cart without even realizing it might not be beneficial for your skin type or skin concerns. Not only should you know what products work for your skin type, but knowing what ingredients work is going to make all the difference in your skin care.
#3 - Seeing results can take up to 6-8 weeks. Okay – I am sure you all know this, but I want everyone to understand why! Depending on the new product you are introducing and the benefits it will provide to the skin will determine when you will start seeing results. For example, if you are using a product meant to hydrate the skin, you should start seeing results within a few days. That is because ceramides are lipids naturally found in the skin and our barrier will drink them up! Other products such as ones that fade hyperpigmentation take longer to see results because the pigment is deep within the layers of the skin and with topical products, we not only have to be patient but consistent. Remember to take photos in good lighting to track your progress. Photos provide a side by side marker of the improvements your skin has made. Relying on your eyes and memory alone can make it feel like no progress has been made since changes are usually transforming in real time.
#4 - The order you apply your products isn’t always as important as you think. Okay - follow me here. Yes, you should know when and where to layer your products in your routine and yes, it can make certain products more effective. However, many people put so much weight into the order they layer their products instead of putting that energy towards the quality of products they are using and how much product is being used. This brings me to my final point, unless specifically directed on the product like with Plated, you don't need to wait for each product to dry down before you apply the next.
I would love to know what extra tips you have picked up on through watching my videos, let’s share below!
